The Humanist Society is undergoing exciting new changes. We’re growing our mission to better serve our membership and the Humanist community. Come find out what’s new and what’s coming.

The AHA Feminist Caucus has had a busy year since the last conference. At our 2013 FC Business Meeting breakout session we will review our progress and future plans for our Pass the ERA campaign, and begin to mobilize more actively to promote awareness of and adherence to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). We will check on the progress of the New Mexico AHA Chapter, HSNM, in organizing their local Feminist Caucus and continue to strategize for organizing at the local level and nesting leadership of the national FC within AHA chapters on a rotating basis.

We will also discuss our membership and fundraising protocols, nomination and selection of Humanist Heroine and other award candidates, and our internal and public communications, use of social media, and reviving some form of a regular FC newsletter or communique.

All AHA members are invited to attend.

Acclaimed anti-violence educator Jackson Katz argues that the epidemic of male violence that plagues American society needs to be understood and addressed as part of a much larger cultural crisis in masculinity. Whether he’s looking at bullying and school shootings or gay bashing, sexual assault, and violence against women, Katz makes a powerful case that male violence, misogyny, and homophobia are inextricably linked to how we define manhood as a culture.

The film gives special attention to how American media have glamorized increasingly regressive and violence masculine ideals in the face of mounting social and economic threats to traditional white male heterosexual authority. Katz’s innovative cultural approach to gender violence prevention has been adopted by the NFL, the NCAA, and the U.S. Marine Corps.

Fred Edwords & panel of CoR leaders – New Initiatives: What UnitedCoR Can Do for You (Mission Bay ABCD)

UnitedCoR, the United Coalition of Reason, is launching exiting new initiatives this year. In addition to its nationally famous billboard and bus ad campaigns, designed to help nontheistic people find sympathetic groups in their local communities, it will now turn its attention outward. That is, UnitedCoR will begin to put the spotlight on prejudice against people in the community of reason and on wasteful, non-charitable spending by leading local religious organizations. A panel of CoR leaders will add their commentary.

Lunch begins 12:00 pm, seminar 1:00 pm

Matt Harding tells the story of how his goofy travel videos became an accidental internet sensation in the early days of YouTube, then gradually evolved into a tool for breaking cultural barriers and finding the simple ways in which we’re all the same. His videos have been viewed over 90 million times and are shown to students in classrooms around the world.

Matt will lead everyone in a dance following his talk!
