A Philosophy of Humanism Symposium Event
Title of Presentation: Grief Beyond Belief and Beyond: How Freethinkers Take Care of Themselves and Each Other
Presentation Summary: Even with the ideals of Humanism, we are still just beginning to address our emotional needs. Grief Beyond Belief, an online support network for those who are mourning without belief in God or an afterlife, is just one of the forums in which Humanists and other Freethinkers have begun to reach out to each other in rational compassion. Rebecca will tell the story of how her own grief at the death of her son led her to found Grief Beyond Belief, and will guide a conversation about how Humanism informs the ways we take care of ourselves and each other.
Biography: Rebecca Hensler is a school counselor with a BA in political activism and a MS in counseling. Following the death of her infant son in 2009, Rebecca found mainstream grief support groups to be dominated by religion and spiritualism. Alienated by talk of angels and signs, she conceived an alternative free of mythology and mysticism. In 2011, Rebecca founded Grief Beyond Belief, an online network providing safe space for grieving Freethinkers to share sorrow, comfort and compassion.
