Remus Cernea is the Honorary President of the Romanian Humanist Association. He was the Executive Director of The Solidarity for Freedom of Conscience (2003-2008) – the first secular humanist NGO from Romania. It saved the Carol Park where the Orthodox Church wanted to build the giant Cathedral for National Redemption (2004-2005). Remus was the founder and former president of the Romanian Humanist Association (2008-2012), a member of the board of the European Humanist Federation (2011-2012), an adviser of the Romanian Prime Minister for environmental issues (2012), and a member of the Romanian Parliament (December 2012 – December 2016). He succeeded in passing laws to have more scientific information on TV and to stop using animals in circuses. His progressive political agenda included LGBT rights and separation between church and state. He studied philosophy at the University of Bucharest.
