In response to a series of Supreme Court decisions that have undermined the separation of church and state, non-Christians have begun in recent years to demand their rightful place in public life alongside Christians, by erecting displays and monuments on public property, giving invocations before legislatures and town boards, and starting their own after-school clubs in public schools. In this presentation, Professor Wexler will describe this important recent development and argue that, for anyone interested in true pluralism, the development is one that should be applauded and continued.

Jay Wexler

Jay Wexler is a professor at Boston University School of Law, where he has taught church/state law since 2001, and a former law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He is the author of the books Holy Hullabaloos: A Road Trip to the Battlegrounds of the Church/State Wars and When God Isn’t Green: A Worldwide Journey to Places Where Religious Practice and Environmentalism Collide. His new book, Our Non-Christian Nation: How Atheists, Satanists, Pagans and Others are Demanding Their Rightful Place in Public Life, will be published in mid-June by Stanford University Press.
