Panel members: Bob Bhaerman (moderator), Debbie Allen, Patrice Hong, Ron Herman
Topic Summary: This past year the Kochhar Humanist Education Center developed “Humanism Begins at Home” — learning activities and lesson plans that children can access via the computer at home and work on independently or with the entire family. The panel will focus on what we can do to make certain that humanism begins at home. We will explore what the AHA can do to inspire families and humanist communities to provide education that fosters scientific literacy and humanist values and, more importantly, how we can provide easy access to the materials they need to get started. The panelists bring a diverse set of experiences to this discussion. They are parents, teachers, and humanist chapter leaders, all of whom are concerned with advancing humanist principles. We will ask the audience to reflect on their own experiences, dilemmas, and solutions for addressing the educational needs of children and families in their humanist communities. Best of all, you will receive an assortment of lesson plans to take home!
