Maintaining Jefferson’s Wall: From Your Backyard to Our Nation’s Capital

With all the recent news about the encroachment of religion into public policy, the secular government our constitutional framers envisioned seems more out of reach each day. While the “Wall of Separation” protecting it may be old and tired, it’s principles remain intact and it remains vital to our democracy.

Matt and David will discuss the work of AHA, its chapters, and its members, as examples of how you and your local organization can help maintain the Wall. From social media research to conversations with lawmakers, themselves, there are many opportunities for everyone to pitch in and help, regardless of how little time or how few resources you have to offer. Bring your questions about activism and your own success stories to share in an extended Q&A session.

Matthew Bulger

Matthew Bulger is the Legislative Director at the American Humanist Association, where he advocates for church-state separation and humanist values in public policy to government officials. Bulger also serves as the editor of the AHA’s quarterly membership publication Free Mind and regularly contributes to TheHumanist.com.

He graduated with a B.A. in political science from American University in Washington D.C., and is the co-founder and former president of the American University Rationalists & Atheists.

David Williamson

David Williamson is co-founder of the Central Florida Freethought Community (CFFC), an organization of atheists and humanists focused on the separation of state and building a thriving secular community in the Greater Orlando area. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Freethought Equality Fund, is Secretary of the Florida Humanist Association, and is co-coordinator of the FHA’s conference FREEFLO.
