Fundamental questions of any sentient being are: what am I, and how did I get here? The historical approach to answering these questions is manifest in the establishment of faith-based religions. People, regardless of their religious persuasion, embrace scientific realities to varying degrees. All would agree that holding your hand over a flame for any significant length of time would be painful. The acceptance of this simple scientific reality is based on repeated personal observation and experience.
When one explores the origins of life, and the associated evolutionary process, the science is intellectual and obscure rather than being experiential and obvious. In fact, previous scientific efforts at understanding the underlying principles of life concluded that life was too improbable of have simply occurred on its own. Today, based on far from equilibrium thermodynamic principles developed by Nobel laureate Ilia Prigogine, for the first time in history these questions can be answered by modern science, with or without the inclusion of conventional faith-based religions. Humans can embrace a fact-based religion. I am an Evolutionist.
Amazingly, modern science tells us that all human (actually all vertebrate) body systems are homeostatically regulated, from conception until death, by marijuana-like compounds known as endocannabinoids (cannabis from within). Furthermore, evolution has continuously expanded the role of the endocannabinoid system as evolutionary complexity increased. In other words, the endocannabinoid system has been a critical player in evolving adaptability through its all-pervasive homeostatic capacity to regulate redox.
The significant new question that emerges is must human knowledge of our origins shape our future so that we embrace the creative nature of nature, and cooperatively work towards embracing the novel possibilities of a modern civilization developing with the enhanced cannabinoid activity that evolution has heretofore demanded. Imagine a world lead by forward looking, cannabinoid endowed people (FLPs) as opposed to today’s world of conflict, aggression and the fear characteristic of cannabinoid deficient backward-looking people (BLPs). Are we insects or are we men?
Robert Melamede’s work demonstrates the creative nature of entropy production as the driving force leading to the origin of life, evolution, and the unique role played by the endocannabinoid system in all of these processes. I use the term Generalized Open-system Dynamics (GOD) to describe “the will of GOD” manifesting as life and health of individuals, as well as societies, financial structures and the biosphere. My religion is science. Like other religions, it is based on faith. However, in this case, faith means faith that there is value to the scientific method, reproducibility and logic as opposed to the blind faith that defines other religions and so often is in opposition to logic and common sense.
